Low-level environmental contaminant exposures prenatally can alter behaviour in infants

According to Sagiv et al 2012 eating fish with even low levels of mercury while pregnant can increase the risk for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in offspring at the age of 8 years. Medium peripartum maternal hair mercury level was 0.45 μg/g. The ADHD risk is associated with maternal mercury levels of at least 1 μg/g. [1]

The PTEN gene may offer a way to treat diabetes

The PTEN gene is the cause of increased sensitivity to the hormone insulin. Aparna Pal et al. 2012 write that the PTEN gene may become a target for drugs to fight insulin resistance, the cause of type 2 diabetes. The PTEN gene encodes for an enzyme that is part of the insulin signalling pathway in the body. It is known to have a role in controlling the body's metabolism, and to play a part in cell growth. Hope for diabetes, obesity, and cancer treatment using the hedgehog signalling pathway

The signalling pathway, acting downstream of the hedgehog protein enables muscle cells and brown fat cells to absorb sugars without relying on insulin. Substances that selectively activate the signalling pathway could thus be utilized in the treatment of diabetes and obesity. [1]

The GMO Maize NK603 GM and its insecticide Roundup linked to mammary tumours in women and liver toxicity in men

A study of Séralini et al 2012 found that NK603 maize and Roundup may cause hormonal disturbances in the same biochemical and physiological pathway with mammary tumours, diseases of the pituitary gland and kidneys. Death in male rats was mostly due to the development of severe hepatorenal insufficiencies, confirming the first signs of toxicity observed in 90 day feeding trials with NK603 maize in 2009. [1]

Primary amoebic meningoencephalitis kills 10 in Pakistan

Primary amoebic meningoencephalitis caused the death of 10 Pakistan in the city of Karachi from March to September. According to the WHO people don’t usually get the brain-affecting form of the disease by drinking water, but by swimming in dirty water or cleaning their nostrils with contaminated water. From the nostrils, the parasite travels to the brain where it destroys tissue. [1]

Three-quarters of African countries face food insecurity: report

While rich countries like USA are spending enormous  efforts on military activities  and leading Arab countries like Saudi Arabia strengthen their military apparatus, the poor are starving. Instead of looking  to improve living conditions on earth efforts continue to explore extraterrestrial space to find a new place to live on.

Zinc supplementation

Zinc deficiency affects about two billion people in the developing world and is associated with many diseases. In children it causes growth retardation, delayed sexual maturation, infection susceptibility, and diarrhoea, contributing to the death of about 800,000 children worldwide per year. [1]

There are 2-4 grams of zinc distributed throughout the human body. Most zinc is in the brain, muscle, bones, kidney, and liver, with the highest concentrations in the prostate and parts of the eye.

Vitamin D does not reduce Upper Respiratory Tract Infections

A clear evidence of the benefit of vitamin D exists only for bone health, measured by increased bone density and reduced fracture rates. [1]

Trans fatty acids consumption linked to cardiometabolic imprint via diabetes pathway

TFA consumption produces a unique cardiometabolic imprint via pathways linked to the insulin resistance syndrome. Consumption of trans fatty acids (TFA) is linked to harmful changes in serum lipids, systemic inflammation, endothelial function visceral adiposity, diabetes, increased  risk of myocardial infarction, coronary heart disease death, and sudden death. [1]

Cherry fruits or cherry extract may prevent recurrent gout attacks

Researchers report that consuming up to three servings.cherries or cherry extract over two days, lowers the risk of gout attack. Cherry intake during a 2-day period was associated with a risk reduction of 35% gout attacks, and  cherry extract intake was associated with a risk reduction of 45%. [1]
