12.11.2009: Brazilian northern state of Pará suffers lack of energy [1]
The State of Pará is rich in solar energy. The District of Ipixana closed the B-010 Belém-Brasilia interstates road for one day. They claim the right to be connected to the main electric grid, following the initiative of Brazilan's President Lulla “Light for All” (Luz para todos). The planning of the connection is being delayed because the construction of the power line must cross protected areas and SEMA and IBAMA must give their consent.

The prject”Light for All” is a serious drawback on the use of solar energy which could decentralise electricity production in the Amazon Region. It is a wrong view of scientists working at the federal Agencies IBAMA, EMBRAPA CELPA and other departments, which do not promote correctly the use of solar energy in different localities

At Barcarena, a small town near Belém, the population says that former photovoltaic arrays of the town and surroundings were unmounted following the connection to the central electric grid.
