“Pan-genome” of Saccharomyces cerevisiae reveals gene exchange between different yeasts

Dunn et al. 2012 describe a multi-species microarray platform and the array-Comparative Genomic Hybridization (aCGH) of the genomes of several Saccharomyces cerevisiae and  S. paradoxus, S. mikatae, S. kudriavzevii, S. uvarum, S. kluyveri and S. castellii. [1]

The technique is able to identify variations in copy number among different yeasts and determines the evolutionary relationships without sequencing the whole genome.

Verticillium wilt diseases and their prevention

Verticillium wilt in olive plants may cause significant yield losses. Jiménez-Díaz et al. 2012 described the disease aetiology, epidemiology, and disease control strategies and measures. [1]

Lupinosis

Lupinosis is a mycotoxicosis caused by the ingestion of toxins produced by the fungus Diaporthe toxica (Phomopsis leptostromiformis) which grows on lupin plants.  Allen and Randall 1993 found that in addition to being an hepatotoxicity, lupinosis also resulted in injury to muscle, kidney and adrenal cortex. [1]

The Magnaporthe grisea complex, plant pathogenic funguses

Magnaporthe oryzae causes rice blast disease. It is a plant-pathogenic fungus and is member of the Magnaporthe grisea complex which contains at least two biological species that have clear genetic differences and do not interbreed. Magnaporthe oryzae and Magnaporthe grisea are complex members. [1]

Fly larvae causes honeybee colony losses in North America

According to John Hafernik, fly parasite Apocephalus borealis, found in honey bee hives in California and South Dakota, may be one cause of colony collapse disorder (CCD) and may easily spread to honey bee colonies throughout North America. The fly deposits its eggs into a bee's abdomen which dies. [1]

Vimto soft drink was found to be contaminated with bacteria and mould, say United Arab Emirate health officials

According to Khalid Al Hosni, laboratory tests found large amounts of bacteria and fungi in the drink, which falls short of the UAE accepted health standards. The fungi found in Vimto drink  produce dangerous toxins that could lead to serious diseases. Mister AlHosny urged the public not to buy the drink if they found it in stores and to report shops selling it to the municipality. [1]

Increasing virulence in Oat Crown Rust caused by Puccinia coronata

Oat species such as Avena sativa and Avena fatua are menaced by crown rust of oat (Puccinia coronata f. sp. avenae). The strategy to control the disease is based on race-specific seedling genes for resistance. [1]

New yeast strains Candida uthaithanina sp. nov. identified in Thailand

Limtong et al. 2011 describe three yeast stains isolated from fruits in Thailand:  Strains DD2-22-1(T) and SK44 and moss (strain ST-449) in Thailand. According to data of gene sequences  the three strains belonge to the same species. [1]

The three strains were assigned to a single novel species of Candida, for which the name Candida uthaithanina sp. nov is proposed. The type strain is DD2-22-1(T) (= BCC 29899(T) = NBRC 104876(T) = CBS 10932(T)).

Lactic bacteria and yeasts in sourdoughs

Vogelmann et al. 2009 assessed the population of lactic acid bacteria and yeasts which can be found in sourdoughs. [1]

Researchers studied interaction of Aspergillus fumigatus and host during lung infection

Aspergillus fumigatus can be found in hay, soils and compost piles. It may cause invasive aspergillosis in lungs of immunosuppressed hosts. [1]
